I know rap and hip-hop aren’t really our big genres here at HMM, but other than the few artist you’ll see me cover, rap and hip-hop are most of my listening. When forced into sharing something about myself as a corporate icebreaker, I commonly describe my music taste as “Fall Out Boy adjacent and rap.” When THOT SQUAD started teasing a new single on TikTok a handful of months ago, I immediately wanted to give it coverage here.
If it’s passed your For You page, you may have seen THOT SQUAD rapping aggressively “I’mma show you how to make a pound cake” adorning the Kitchenaid mixer and commonly accompanied by her actual grandmother (usually wearing a t-shirt boldly stating “Your Pop-Pop Eats Coochie”). Check out “POUND CAKE” for sure, it was an amazing introduction to this artist, and Granny.
TikTok virality notwithstanding, THOT SQUAD’s aggressive lyrical style, accompanied with grinding beats is exactly the side of sonically chaotic I am immediately drawn to. In the new single, “BSTFU,” I found myself ready to fight God, the president, my own father, my boss, whoever came across me. If you’ve read my other reviews, the ultimate test is a good weather day outside Denver and how it feels in the car. Don’t worry, it’s a 10/10 on the “would commit moving violations to this song” scale. If you’re unfamiliar with THOT SQUAD, or already a member of the Lemon Square Squad, “BSTFU” will give you the exact slightly angry and intense combo you are looking for in a feminine voiced rap song. If nothing else, the single line “Tell your dad to text me / Flew me out like next week” will be stuck in your head and your thirst trap Instagram post caption for the rest of the year.
THOT SQUAD has under 200k monthly listeners on Spotify. If you’re new to their work, check out the THOT SQUAD FRESHMEN ORIENTATION Playlist. Check out their TikTok, and follow their moves (small now, but soon to be big, in my opinion) via their LinkTree.
