MSPAINT’s new EP, No Separation, is like if you gave Beastie Boys a copy of The Communist Manifesto and told them to make a post-hardcore record… and I mean that as the highest compliment. The synth punk band from Hattiesburg, MS — known for their unique blend of noise, being very politically vocal, and their lack of guitars — have managed to kick things up a notch on their newest release. The band made a name for themselves in the scene with their critically acclaimed debut album, Post-American, in 2023 and clearly have every intention to keep that trajectory.
No Separation hits hard with the EP’s opener (and most recent single), “Drift,” a commentary on the US’ growing economic inequality and the desire to live long enough to see the eventual collapse of it all. The heavy, distorted bass and almost haunting keys on “Drift” could fit right into a Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross score.
“Wildfire” confronts the guilt of contributing to the demise of the environment, while “No Separation” encourages the fight against it, repeating, “won’t let this break me.” “No Separation” and “Angel” are much more melodic than MSPAINT’s previous work with “Angel” showing a poppier side to an otherwise almost nu metal sound.
“Angel” was released as a single last month to announce the No Separation EP. The dreamy synth and positive vibe to “Angel” make it a standout on the record. Vocalist DeeDee shouts, “I feel like the problem / I feel in the way / But I’m staying present / This is just today” and reminds us, “There’s no control / just controlling yourself.”
MSPAINT doesn’t let anyone define who they are and what they put out into the world. They wear their hearts on their sleeves and are clear with their message over and over again. No Separation is refreshing, compelling, clever, and I can bet it’s like nothing you’ve heard before.
