In their 20th year of being a band, Mayday Parade is back with their new independently released album, Sweet. Sweet is the first release of a highly anticipated trilogy. Fans of Mayday Parade will know what to expect when they go to sit down and digest a new Mayday Parade album: elements of their emo roots and heart wrenching lyrics. Sweet does not fall short of these expectations.
The album opens up with the single, “By The Way”, a perfect showcase of the band’s creative palette -– a cohesive blend of piano and guitar with the company of emotionally fueled lyrics. Because of this cohesive blend, it is evident as to why “By The Way” was chosen to not only be a single, but also the album’s opening track.
In addition to singles, “Pretty Good To Feel Something” and “Towards You” nudge fans to other areas of Mayday Parade’s strengths. “Pretty Good To Feel Something” holds elements of electro-pop fused with grungy guitar riffs, while “Towards You” is a slower ballad that showcases Derek Sanders’ (singer) ability to beautifully convey emotions with his voice.
Other standouts are “4000 Days Plus The Ones I Don’t Remember” and “Who’s Laughing Now” -– firm pop punk anthems that feel like a return to Mayday Parade’s roots. “Who’s Laughing Now” features Joe Taylor, lead singer of Knuckle Puck, in a fast paced song that is notable and exhilarating to listen to.
Sweet is a fantastic first album of the trilogy that Mayday Parade has planned to release. It perfectly encompasses all of the band’s strengths, while also showing how the band has grown sonically and lyrically within the past 20 years. Mayday Parade has shown how they can be consistent and true to their emo roots, while bringing new elements into their music that is refreshing with every new addition to their discography.
